SDPC participant and Scottish Government drug policy advisor Roy Robertson spoke to the BBC about his desire to see a ‘support over penalise’ drug strategy in Scotland. Roy also highlighted the need for a public enquiry along the lines of a Royal Commission in order to explore the evidence and effectiveness of the current framework. This is an approach backed by SDPC, and indeed we would go further and call for a broader public engagement strategy, one that engages multiple communities and methods such as citizen panels/juries and deliberative conversations.
SDPC have been carrying out small scale deliberative engagement through our conversations (see the documents section), and, in collaboration with the RSA Scotland are in the process of creating a larger engagement strategy for organisations and communities. This will include a drug policy engagement toolkit designed to encourage deliberation and respectful dialogue on drug policy in Scotland. Please contact us if you are interested in creating broader engagement.
